Chris Noakes (Heashot / Portrait Photographer)

I’ll say right away that the title (obviously) doesn’t refer to the model, who I think we can all agree looks absolutely stunning.

Rather I'm making light of a misunderstanding on my own part.

A few days ago I made the decision to branch out in a new direction. I’ve been experimenting here and there, playing with different styles, but this was a decision made with a little more focus. I wanted a style that I could shoot along side my headshots, but that allowed more of a creative release than a headshot does.

And I’ve always loved the look of the “beauty” style photography I’ve seen. I love the simplistic perfection of a well-done beauty image. It does exactly what the name implies, displays someone in beautiful fashion. I feel drawn to it.

What I admittedly didn’t understand was the purpose… that being to sell a product.

Some awesome people, in a professional group I’m a part of, explained to me that in beauty photography – the focus is meant to be on the product. The make-up. The skin. The hair. The model in beauty photography is simply the canvas displaying the product. An analogy might be made to the plate holding the food in commercial food photography. I don’t like that.

That’s not to say it’s wrong, just that it doesn’t suit my own intentions. So, I borrowed the aspects of the genre that I do enjoy, and made it something more my own. I love the perfection seen in beauty work, and am borrowing key components of beauty photography - but I'm bringing the focus back onto the person. I want my work to be about them, not what they’re selling.

Thus; almost “beauty”…

...and Gabrielle completely killed it.
